I was always treated alike in my school. There was never a star treatment: Sparsh Khanchandani

Sparsh Khanchandani who plays little Iccha in the Hindi TV show ‘Uttaran’  shared her thoughts on the show, and how she was treated like any other child in school despite her fame on the show. “I was never treated like a star in my school, which kept me grounded. But my friends and teachers used to always be curious to know what’s going to happen in the coming episode.” Added Sparsh.

Sharing more on how her friends and teacher address her, Sparsh said,” All of them call me by my real name but my pet name is Go Go. My mom calls me Go Go because she thinks this is a cute name and suits me well!”

Sparsh shared more details about how she used to perform in academics and time management between her shoot schedule and academics.” My teachers used to be pleased with my performance in academics and I used to do quite well in all the subjects. There was never pressure with respect to time management because I used to carry all the study material to the sets and study in between shoot breaks. That entire time when I used to shoot for Uttaran was full of fun instead of any pressure. Everyone was extremely supportive towards my studies as well.”

Sparsh started her acting career at a young age, but she never compromised with her studies. She also feels that child actors who enter the entertainment industry at a young age should never neglect the importance of studies. “Studies should always come first, and every child needs to complete their studies no matter what. In my opinion, acting is not a steady career because you may or may not get roles. The time is not always the same. Studies hold a lot of importance.”

In the Hindi TV show Uttaran, you have portrayed both positive and negative characters, which one do you prefer more?
As an actor, I think both roles are great. But personally, I prefer the good character, as playing the villainous Tapasya made me feel quite negative. As an actor, a negative role is certainly more challenging, it creates variations and twists in the show.

What’s your take on the story plots portrayed in Indian TV shows?
I think these shows have undergone significant changes over time and will continue to evolve with each new generation. There are shows that portray strong characters with amazing storylines and successfully make a positive impact on society.

Which show according to you is the biggest competitor of Uttaran?
It is challenging to find specific faults because each performance is unique and there is competition at all levels.

How special is Uttaran to you?
Uttaran holds a special place in my life both professionally and personally. It was a significant show that played a major role in my career. It was the starting point of many good memories, including my rise to fame, my comeback, and even meeting my significant other.

If not an actress, what would you be?
I used to dream of becoming an air hostess. Now I’m an actress so I admire this profession very much.

Here’s what Meghna Malik thinks about actors refusing to play aged roles.

Meghna Malik’s portrayal of Ammaji in the free Hindi TV show ‘Na Aana Iss Des Laado’ was critically acclaimed and garnered recognition. Despite her age, she confidently took on the challenge of playing a strong character, with grey hair and a mother to three grown men. However, she feels that actors decline to play aged roles.

“Actors refusing to play aged roles are correct to some extent, as the industry often paints them in a certain way. She points out that while male actors continue to work opposite younger actresses even at the age of 50, female actors are often expected to step out of the industry when they reach a certain age. This reflects how the industry needs to change with regard to the aging of female actors.” She added.

Meghna Malik explains that she didn’t hesitate to play the role of Ammaji, a character almost twice her age, because the character was interesting to her as an actor. She emphasizes that when a character is interesting, she sees it as an opportunity rather than a challenge. “Playing Ammaji was never boring and throughout the show, I was able to explore more aspects of this character. That’s why I did not refuse to take up this role.” Added Meghna.

Meghna Malik believes that the character of Ammaji was not defined by her age, but by her strength, power and being a central character. “The industry is not kind to young female actors, and it does not help when aging is only used as a device to replace them. Actors should only continue to play a role as long as it remains interesting and central to the story. If a character becomes boring, actors should step out and not be motivated by money.”

Here’s a candid conversation with Veena who shared a few insights about her on-screen character, her nervousness during the look test and much more. Read on.

“I am playing the lead for the first time in Radha Prem Ki Deewani and I was very nervous when I got to know that I would share the screen with Sachit Patil. There were several thoughts going through my mind because I wasn’t even confident during my look test. Sachit is a senior actor but irrespective of that he made me comfortable on the set. To ease down my hesitation, he used to ask me to read the script with him and work on the dialogues together. That way, it was easy for me to sail through and overcome my fears.” shared Veena aka Radha.

“I was also under the impression that I will have to behave in a specific manner in front of Sachit because he is an established actor whereas I am completely new to the small screen. But my opinion regarding him completely changed when we started interacting about the script, the show, our respective characters and Sachit is a nice human being.” Added Veena.

It takes time for newbies to adjust to a new environment, but Veena considers herself lucky to work with an amazing co-star and a wonderful team. “For newbies like me it would have been a little difficult to adjust on the sets and with the character but unlike my thoughts, everyone on the sets was so friendly that I consider all of them as my second family. The overall ambience on the sets is very positive and this helped me to get along with everyone well. In a way, I consider myself lucky to be chosen as the lead for Radha Prem Ki Deewani.”

Talking further about her on-screen character, Veena said,” Radha is a bubbly and sorted girl. I relate to most of Radha’s qualities. She is also someone who takes care of everyone and is full of positive vibes. Kindhearted and happy go lucky are also some of the qualities which describe Radha’s character well.”

I thoroughly enjoy solitude and finding joy in the simplest things: Host Simran Kochar from ‘Dine with Colors’.

Simran Kochar Singh is the host of the popular food and travel TV show, Dine With Colors, which airs on Desi Play TV every Sunday at 9 PM ET/ 9.30 PM PT.  The show is a culinary adventure that travels around North America, showcasing the best restaurants, chefs, international cuisine, and famous landmarks in the region. It celebrates the most amazing food, drinks, and recipes from around the United States. Here’s a quick interaction with the cheerful host Simran Kochar:

1- What factors do you consider when choosing a restaurant to feature on ‘Dine with colors’?
Our team is responsible for selecting restaurants to feature on our show. We begin by choosing a location, and then we select one Indian restaurant and one non-Indian restaurant to feature. When considering Indian restaurants, we look for those that have an interesting angle or story, and that offers high-quality cuisine. We also consider reviews, but these are not the only factors, as we also want to highlight lesser-known, small restaurants that may not have many reviews, but are still highly regarded by locals for their food. For non-Indian restaurants, we follow a similar process, with the added goal of introducing our Indian audience to new cultures through the stories and experiences of the chefs. We prioritize chefs who enjoy conversation and storytelling, as this helps to provide a rich, regional context for the dishes we showcase.

2- Can you share a dish from your childhood that you could eat daily without ever getting tired of it, and why?
One dish from my childhood that I could eat every day without growing tired of is warm goat cheese on toast. This dish brings back memories of reading one of my favorite books, Heidi, and the idea of enjoying it with a glass of milk transports you to Switzerland! Another dish that I enjoy and that brings back happy memories is Bhurjee, scrambled eggs with onions and tomatoes, eaten with Indian bread called ‘paratha’. This is a favorite breakfast and midnight snack that reminds me of sleepovers with the family. Eggs are comfort food for me and will always be a go-to option.

3- When you’re not cooking or eating delicious food, how do you like to spend your free time?
When I have free time, I often like to spend it alone, finding happiness in simple pleasures. This might include taking a walk, enjoying a cup of coffee at dawn, reading, writing poetry by moonlight, and practicing introspection and meditation. I also enjoy picnics, although I could easily spend a long time talking about the food, I like to include it in my picnic baskets!

4- Tell us something about your experience of hosting ‘Dine with Colors’
I am grateful to have the opportunity to share the stories of restaurant owners and chefs and they’re often challenging and inspiring career journeys in America. I respect the hardworking staff, the time and hospitality given by restaurant owners and staff, and the diverse cultures and traditions represented in the show. I am also thankful to the entire team for putting in the effort and helping me with the enlightening experience of doing the show.
